(FAQs) About the Dog Food Calculator
How accurate is this dog food calculator?
Our calculator uses vet-approved formulas based on your dog’s weight, age, activity level, and food type. While it gives a solid estimate, every dog is unique—so it’s always good to consult your vet, especially if your dog has special needs.
Can I use this tool for puppies and senior dogs?
Yes! You can choose from “puppy,” “adult,” or “senior” in the calculator. The feeding needs for puppies and older dogs are different, and the tool adjusts the results accordingly.
What if I feed both dry and wet dog food?
The calculator works best when you choose one food type. If you mix dry and wet food, we recommend calculating the calories for each separately and adjusting the portions manually.
How many times should I feed my dog per day?
That depends on your dog’s age and schedule. Most adults do well with 2 meals a day. Puppies may need 3–4 meals. You can enter your preferred number of meals in the calculator and get the portion per meal.
What are the recommended calories per cup for dry and wet food?
Generally, dry food has around 350–450 kcal/cup, and wet food has about 250–300 kcal/cup. If you know your food’s specific calorie count, enter it in the “Calories per Cup” field for the most accurate results.
Can this dog food calculator help with weight loss or weight gain?
Absolutely. You can input your dog’s ideal weight instead of current weight to get calorie suggestions that support healthy weight loss or gain.
Does this calculator include treats in the feeding plan?
Yes! You can check the box to “Include Treats (10%)”, and it will reduce the daily meal calories accordingly. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calorie intake.
Is this dog food calculator free to use?
Yes, 100% free! You can use it as many times as you like for different dogs or diet goals.
Can I print or save my dog’s food plan?
While we don’t yet have a “print” button, you can simply press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (Mac) to print or save your result as a PDF.
Should I trust this more than my vet’s recommendation?
Not at all—this tool is meant to assist, not replace professional advice. If your dog has a medical condition, sensitive digestion, or a special diet, talk to your vet before making major changes.
